Paul has a record of success as a leader with both private sector and non-profit sector organizations, specializing in strategic internal and external communication. He also has experience with complex project management, implementing systemic change, cutting edge digital media and creating a workplace atmosphere where employees thrive.
He knows Michigan as few do, having worked as a newspaper reporter and editor in the communities of Grand Rapids, Flint, Bay City, Muskegon and his hometown of Kalamazoo during his 31-year journalism careerwith the same parent company. An award-winning editor, he led newsrooms ranging from 40 journalists in Bay City to more than 100 in Grand Rapids. As publisher of The Muskegon Chronicle, he managed a multi-million dollar annual budget and led 200 employees.Paul was named Media Person of the Year in 2011 by the West Michigan Public Relations Society of America for efforts to communicate with readers and engage the community.
At Catholic Charities West Michigan, he developed a strategic communications plan to educate the public about the misunderstood non-profit human services agency that servespeople in need in 11 counties. This strategic communication plan led to significantly greater financial contributions for the agency as a result of maximizing the impact of traditional and social media in spreading the agency’s branding message.Paul’s other non-profit experience came from nearly a quarter of a century of volunteer leadership positions on a wide variety of community and statewide non-profit boards. He chaired the Grand Rapids Community Foundation board of trustees in 2015. He alsowas president of the Historical Society of Michigan board of trustees from 2014-2017.
Paul earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Miami University. He understands the forces and trends that influence organizationstoday and is excited to help them continually improve their leadership approach to ensure success in a fast-changing world.
